House Hunting 101: What to Remember

House hunting can be a very exciting –albeit stressful – time of your life. Owning a Bexar County home now is a smart move, as interest rates are low and the government homebuyer tax credit has been extended. There are a number of points, however, that you should keep in mind so that you can feel confident that you made a smart financial move:
- Location, location, location – Don’t let a beautiful home sway you; the location of a home is almost as important as the home itself, for several reasons. If you have children, you will need to consider the quality of the schools in the area; you may also want to check out the nearest medical facilities; and you will certainly want to make sure your commute is reasonable. The location of a home should be considered first before making any decisions regarding the home.
- Neighbors – Neighbors can often be a clear indication of the neighborhood in which the home is located. Do the neighbors take care of their homes? Is the quality of the other homes in the neighborhood reflective of the home you are buying? Remember: at some point you may want to sell the home, and neighbors who fail to care for their homes will make the process of selling your home all the more challenging.
- Make a list of things you absolutely must have and things that you would like to have, but don’t necessarily need. Then, review your list after visiting each home. Sometimes, a comprehensive list of the home’s assets can provide you with a clearer picture of whether this home will suit both you and your family.
- Bring a camera to record special features of the Bexar County property. If you see several homes throughout a day, the homes and their features may all become a bit muddled. To prevent confusion from setting in, bring along a digital camera and take shots of areas of the home that are of interest to you.
